What is a urinary tract infection (UTI)?
A urinary tract infection (UTI) is a bacterial infection that affects any part of the urinary system, including the kidneys, bladder, ureter, or urethra. Common symptoms include a constant urge to urinate, a burning sensation during urination, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, and pelvic discomfort. According to a study published in the National Library of Medicine, adult women are 30 times more likely to develop a UTI than men. Therefore, UTI is more common in women. Medical intervention is essential to completely clear the infection, however keeping yourself hydrated and maintaining proper hygiene can help prevent infection.
Another study published in the Indian Journal of Microbiology Research showed that the overall prevalence of UTI was 33.54 percent, of which 66.78 percent were women and 33.22 percent were men. In their lifetime, 5060 percent of women will have at least one UTI and one in three will have at least one symptomatic UTI that requires treatment by age 24.

What are the benefits of rice water for UTI?
In Ayurveda, rice water, or Tandulodaka, is believed to be beneficial for treating UTIs due to its soothing properties. It contains compounds that may help relieve inflammation and irritation in the urinary tract. The starch in rice water can create a protective coating, potentially reducing discomfort during urination. Dr Sharma said, It helps in increasing blood flow in the body and reducing pitta as excess pitta can cause heat and cause a burning sensation. It also helps balance vata and kapha which helps prevent digestive issues and relieve burning symptoms during UTI. Additionally, Tabdulodaka is considered to have a mild diuretic effect, promoting increased urine production and potential removal of bacteria from the urinary system.
